A couple simple ways to freshen your home for spring!

Getting you home ready for springtime should not have to feel like a chore, and definitely should not break the bank either. Here I have a couple simple ways to freshen up for home for spring. Just take away an idea or two to use yourself to help fill that craving for Spring we are all having right now!

These simple ideas for freshening up your house for Spring are meant to help make your space brighter, leave you with a big smile, and help to reduce any stress you are currently feeling. The tips I am sharing here are super easy to implement and quick, because no one wants to spend a ton of time, stuck, focusing on one small space.

1.   Start with a clean slate

Clean everything! Clean out all the dirt that winter left behind. Scrub the floors, dust and wash the windows and shades/blinds to let the sun shine through. Don’t forget behind the appliances and your furniture! Unclutter shelving, cabinets, tables and counter tops. Instantly you will feel so much better!

2.   Organize before you decorate

Get winter out of the way! Organize your closet to spring and summer clothing and shoes, and gather your gardening things too! Reorganizing will give you a whole new outlook for spring.

3. Fill a vase with some fresh blooms.

4. Hang a spring wreath on your front door.

5. Toss a spring pillow onto your couch and/or bed.

6. Change out an art piece/picture.

7. Use fresh or faux greens throughout your home.

8. Replace your hand towels.

9.   Lighten up your outdoor space.

10.   Switch out your doormat.

As stated before, these are simple things, but can really add color and life to your home. It’s not all about needing something new and better, but choosing to re-purpose and re-organize what  you already have. The great thing about Spring is the growth and life waking from the dead of winter, so enjoy and celebrate that! Bring that beautiful green into your home, making it as gorgeous as your outdoor space!

Happy Spring!!

A hint of fall in the Master Bedroom!

Hello friends!

I’m sorry it’s been a bit that I have written a blog here! But the wait was worth it, I am so excited to share with you our master bedroom with some added touches of fall:) This is actually the first that I have brought fall decor upstairs, and I don’t regret it!

I am realizing that I am becoming much of a minimalist, which is totally ok! I am so thankful because everything feels and looks so much more simple, clean and bright! So as you can see I added some simple fall decor to our bedroom, and let’s just say it made it so cozy and inviting!!

You may think something else also looks different….. Yes!! We sold our bedroom furniture on Facebook and bought every piece in here for the same amt on amazon! Steal!!!!!!!!! The iron framed bed made for the space to be more open and not so enclosed feeling, and the white nightstands aside created a very clean and bright look! No more chocolate brown in our room! The lamps, accent pillow and area rug all added warm tones to the grey and white, we are loving the mixture! As they all flow together, we are really glad we chose to purchase the grey dresser (matching our side storage unit), and then getting different nightstands in white, it allows for a settle and flowy look, everything isn’t so matchy, matchy. I will be honest though, I had a very tough time deciding if I wanted everything to match or mix , and for those of you who are asking yourself the same question mix it up!!!!!!!!!!!!

DIY tips to Improve your Deck and/or Patio

Thank you for your patience, as my husband and I just got back from an amazing vacation to Hawaii. We are sad and happy to be back!

PS. If you get the chance and/or opportunity to go, you need to GO!!!!

So I would like to share with you a few simple things you can do to your outdoor space to easily make it look like a whole new space! For example here is what we did:

Repairs

  • Replace floorboards that aren’t sturdy or are old/rotting out (2).

Repaint

  • Deck
  • Spray Painted Tiki + Poles
  • Spray painted Flower planters/Shepard hooks
  • Metal arbor

I purchased the: Craftsman “paint and primer in one” to metal at Kmart for $6 each

Scrub a Dub Dub

  • Simply used soap+ water with a high pressure setting with hose to clean out spots on the area rug
  • Spot cleaned chair cushions with soap+ water with a high pressure setting with hose

Added

  • New outdoor chair throw pillows ( from Homegoods)
  • Weather protected lantern ( from Homegoods)
  • A flower pot that perfectly adds with the new pillows ( from Marshalls)
  • Globe string lights ( click here to purchase)
  • Outdoor curtain rod (click here to purchase)
  • Outdoor water resistant curtain panels (click here to purchase)

Took away

  • Arbor Chandelier – One of the lights broke, and because the light has been dc’d we could not find a replacement. Instead we decided to add and weave string lights (that are attached) to the center of the arbor

Other things you can do as well

  • Add potted plants
  • Invest in patio furniture
  • Power wash patio
  • Eliminate weeds in patio cracks

Break down of the costs:

  • Behr Exterior flat paint- 1 gallon $28
  • Behr deck over paint- 1 gallon $35
  • Craftsman “paint and primer” to metal  spray paint – $6 each
  • Throw pillows (2 to a pack) -$20 each
  • Flower pot – $6
  • Tabletop Lantern – $15

This simple refresh sure made for a new look! A look that we both have been wanting for a bit now. After time, paint fades, style changes, and you just need to add a little to change the feel, and make for a new look! After the application of 1 coat of exterior black paint, it instantly showed off the arbor! Previously, the grey color was so faded, you really didn’t know what the color was supposed to be, that goes along with the tiki torches. To match the arbor, and also allow the flowers to pop, I spray painted the flower planters, and I surely don’t regret it! I was so excited to add the globe string lights, because they add so much to the space! Especially at night, when they twinkle and the lights gleam down and bring out the lush green ferns. We knew we wanted to “enclose” our arbor space a little for more privacy, and it took a bit of time to figure out exactly what we wanted to do… But we decided to add the weathered outdoor curtain panels, and we love them!!!!!! We love the pop the curtains add to the arbor, and how cozy it made the space instantly.

Side note: We decided to not put any curtains on the side(s) because of safety reasons with the tiki’s and the grill, as  well as some bushes being in the way. Not a problem at all, we love the main view where the curtains were placed.

While some of the top layering of wood was peeling, we decided to not worry about replacing until we completely redo the deck and add a patio down the road. Why spend $$$ now when we can just save it, and do it right when we want to add the patio? But honestly once the “deck over” was applied, because of the thickness it helped make it more settle and not be as apparent. It actually adds more of a rustic feel, which I don’t mind at all! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog, as much as I did writing it!

A $10 yardsale find!

I am so excited to share with you my $10 yard sale find! Spontaneously, I woke up, nudged my hubby and said “let’s go yard sailing!”, and so we did! I feel like when we go at unplanned times, is when we always find the goodies, and that’s totally ok!

As soon as I spotted this cabinet, I knew it had to come home with us! It’s the perfect size, it’s MINT (mint is my all time FAV color!!!), and I love the rustic feel of this cabinet! Right before we purchased it, my husband turns and says, “Britt, do you know where you’re even putting this?”

“NOPE! But I will find a spot” (with a big smile on my face). AND, sure enough, after we got home, while I was putting some things away, I instantly thought of the perfect spot! After the cabinet was cleaned thoroughly, I placed it up in the hallway and it was meant to be! Not too big, and not too small for the space. I love the pop it gives against our “agreeable gray” wall color, and how the frames (that were already there) above add to the feel of the cabinet, it just all flows so well together! 🙂

Before/After

We did have to move the frames a tad bit higher so that the basket wouldn’t get in the way of the lower picture…. But that was an easy fix!

Not the biggest deal, but I am trying to decide if I should paint the inside or get creative with some wallpaper?? I honestly am leaning towards not painting it, and I say that because how it is now, it just gives it so much character and so such feeling. I think painting it will take away the rustic/chippy from it, I for sure don’t want that! BUT I may wallpaper it, I will update you on that in the near future! There’s something about keeping at least one piece of furniture original and being ok with a lot of marking/wear&tear to add to the farmhouse style.  That being said……..

You know how after you place something in it’s spot and you just absolutely love it right away… and have such a good feeling about the space??? That’s what I am trying to explain, and I hope you can kinda feel that as you read this post.

On a side note…. I encourage you to go check out some nearby yard sales, and find something fun to add in your home! If you do find something cool, please share with me! I plan to do more yard sailing this year:)

A $35 transformation!

Hello! I was so excited to see that drop cloths were coming into trend, They have so many uses…… including being used as curtains and furniture slipcovers! I do not regret this $35 purchase, instead I am bragging about it! We had a hard time finding the right slipcover, because we have reclining furniture, but the drop cloths fixed the problem!

Why did we choose to add slipcovers?

  • We wanted lighter colored furniture
  • Having 2 dogs, they preserve the quality of the furniture

There are many ways to fixate this on your furniture:

  • Using a no sew method and just tucking away, allowing a more flowy look
  • Sewing and having a more fitted look

I purchased these drop cloths from Lowe’s, you can also get them at stores such as: Home depot, ACE, Walmart etc. Click here for the drop cloth products. For our 3 person sofa we used a 9×12, and our love seat we used a 6×9. In store the only sizes they had were: 6×9, 9×12, and 12×15. Depending if you want a more fitted look vs flowy look that will determine what size you will purchase.

I wanted that flowy look, so it was easy peasy for us!  After washing the cloths we placed evenly on each piece of furniture so that the cloth went JUST to the floor, and then started tucking away.

I highly recommend this to all! It easily gives that farmhouse look, changes the feel of the room, is easy care, and most important it’s SO affordable!!
